Fear of being disappointed

A Cornish object pictured recently.

Lots of new breweries are opening in Cornwall: we know of three that have opened since autumn last year. This is exciting news, especially as at least one of them seems to be intending to fill the gap in the market for stronger and more intensely flavoured beers.

A few years ago, we’d have bent over backwards to get to them as soon as possible but, these days, we’re a bit nervous and a little reluctant.

The really silly thing? One of them has a brewery tap less than five minutes from our house in Penzance. And yet we walk past, we don’t go in. We fancy a pint, we go somewhere else.

Why? Why are we putting it off? Well… we’re afraid their beer might suck, and it’ll be disappointing and awkward.

We don’t worry about this a lot, by the way — just enough to keep “try that new brewery” slipping down our to do list. Next week, though, we’re going to do it. And if we don’t mention this again, it means their beer did suck.

just do it! then go visit them too :)

Surely better to try it – if it’s awesome, great! If it has faults, tell them so they might improve their beers?

I shall await your report (or not) with interest…

Just do it. You might be missing something great! (For some reason I tend to be the optimist when dealing with beer… with other things not so much.)

The only way to find out if any brewery is any good is to sample their wares. Therefore I would always advise taking the plunge.

It’s certainly a different scene from here in Victoria. So rarely do new breweries open that I’ve spent months speculating and salivating and pacing around waiting for them to open by the time they actually start serving. Must be nice to go “ooh look another brewery”. Almost uniquely English experience I’ll bet. I miss that country sometimes. Sob.

  7. Come visit us. We would love some feedback on the beer. The reason we started up is because we are always disappointed by what is being churned out, with little care or thought about if its any good! We have had some really positive feedback from the nwaf, where they had our first ever brew on show. And the test brew IPA went down well at the opening on Friday. Come see us, you might even leave excited rather than disappointed!
