			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sometimes, holding an establishment up to the standard of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moon_Under_Water">the mythical perfect English pub</a> can be unfair because there are now so many different business models operating successfully under that banner.</p>
<p>One of the most common alternative models is one we associate particularly with <a href="http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/">Wetherspoons</a>, although we&#8217;ve got no idea if they originated it. These kind of pubs:</p>
<ul>
<li>are &#8220;food-led&#8221;, but certainly not gastropubs</li>
<li>high turnover</li>
<li>operate on a &#8220;what&#8217;s your table number?&#8221;, order food at the bar basis</li>
<li>are usually based in very big hall-like buildings and</li>
<li>have some of the trappings of a traditional pub, e.g. dark wood.</li>
</ul>
<p>In Cornwall, with its busy tourist trade, there are lots of these places, half empty in the winter but <em>heaving</em> in summer. Most are run by St Austell but not all.</p>
<p>What does a <strong>good</strong> pub of this type look like? Let&#8217;s take a St Austell pub in Newquay as an example.</p>
<ul>
<li>Despite being food-led, <strong>a great range of beer in tip-top condition</strong>.</li>
<li>Efficiently run &#8212; not too much waiting, food delivered quickly.</li>
<li>Clean and tidy &#8212; no peas rolling around the floor or crumbs on the tables.</li>
<li>As cosy as possible &#8212; big enough to house a Zeppelin but warm, with booths and pillars to hide behind.</li>
<li>No illusions &#8212; this pub doesn&#8217;t claim to be traditional, historic or characterful.</li>
</ul>
<p>We&#8217;ll always choose <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-British-Camra-Adrian-Tierney-Jones/dp/1852492651">a proper pub first</a> but, in their own way, pubs of this type give beer a home in unhospitable territory. They&#8217;re rarely charming, but they surely have their place.</p>
<p><em>Bailey used to work in a pub like this as a student waiter (a &#8220;Brewer&#8217;s Fayre&#8221;). One of his jobs was picking chips and peas out of the revolving sauce tray and stirring in the crust on the ketchup. <strong>That</strong> is why they always have sauce in sachets these days.</em></p>

<p>Sometimes, you come across a band&#8217;s first single and, despite low-budget production and rough edges, recognise raw talent.</p>
<p>Well, that also turns out to be our experience of the new <a href="http://www.cornishcrown.co.uk/">Cornish Crown Brewery</a> which <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2012/01/19/fear-of-being-disappointed/">we were so apprehensive about visiting</a>.</p>
<p>On a cold Wednesday night, we made it to <a href="http://www.thecrownpenzance.co.uk/">the Crown in the centre of Penzance</a>, the tap for the brewery which is actually based on an industrial estate a few miles away at Badger&#8217;s Cross in Gulval, where we tried pints of Bitter (3.7%) and Strong Pale Ale (4.8%).</p>
<p>First impressions were not promising: the thin, scummy heads on our pints did not make our mouths water.</p>
<p>What these pints lacked in stage presence, however, they made up for in taste. West Country beer often tends towards sweetness but both of these were bitter in that way that makes you thirsty &#8212; a very good sign. There was evidence of a heavy hand with the hops in the aroma, too. Sometimes, a good first impression can diminish as the beer warms up but, in this case, both beers were good to the last drop. Perhaps there was a hint of the burnt waxiness we associate with Skinner&#8217;s or Otter, but not enough to be a serious distraction.</p>
<p>The final verdict: we happily stayed for a second pint and will be keeping a keen eye on developments.</p>

<p><a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2012/01/13/real-ale-loyalist-or-a-craft-keg-fanboy/">Our post in which we asked people to choose pubs based purely on keg/cask beer selection</a> generated plenty of comment and &#8212; as we&#8217;d hoped &#8212; gave us plenty more food for thought. So, here are a few further observations, as the dust settles.</p>
<p>1. Craft beer&#8217; and &#8216;real ale&#8217; aren&#8217;t just about beer: they can&#8217;t be separated from all the cultural gubbins that surrounds them. That&#8217;s why several commenters questioned the very basis of the post, and why <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2012/01/13/real-ale-loyalist-or-a-craft-keg-fanboy/#comment-48552">Simon &#8220;Reluctant Scooper&#8221; Johnson&#8217;s sarky aside about pork pies and topless barmaids is valid</a>.</p>
<p>2. We don&#8217;t want to be pushed into taking sides in an imaginary battle between &#8216;real ale&#8217; and &#8216;craft keg&#8217;. There&#8217;s room for complexity in this conversation, and absolutists on either side are in a minority. They&#8217;ve got a place in the conversation, too, but it&#8217;d be a shame if it was all about them chucking bricks at each other over everyone else&#8217;s heads.</p>
<p>3. Whether it should or not, this conversation makes people defensive and emotional. (<a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2012/01/13/real-ale-loyalist-or-a-craft-keg-fanboy/#comment-48335">Even we &#8216;threw our toys out of the pram&#8217; this time</a> which happens <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2008/02/16/a-model-beer-festival/#comment-771">fairly infrequently</a>.) Isn&#8217;t that bonkers? As we&#8217;re sure someone will point out before long,<strong> it&#8217;s only beer.</strong> (&#8220;<a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/11/22/its-not-only-beer/">Oh no it isn&#8217;t</a>!&#8221;)</p>
<p>4. Finally, if we could choose from all<strong> four</strong> pubs, we&#8217;d be in the Bird in Hand, the pub with the interesting cask ale. We&#8217;re <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/norbet/4086671796/">Real Ale Twats</a> at heart. Others might well choose the &#8216;craft keg&#8217; pub, the Red Lion, and we wouldn&#8217;t think any less of them for it.</p>

<p>Bass is better regarded as an icon of graphic design than as a beer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s usually found in <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/10/10/hot-pub-time-machine/">pubs that seem stuck in a timewarp</a> and, in our experience at least, is rarely drinkable, from either keg or cask. We&#8217;ve found it sour and stale everywhere from grotty pubs with sticky carpets to gaudily wallpapered &#8216;style bars&#8217; in south London.</p>
<p>A couple of weeks ago, however, we had a pint that was in tip-top condition and were reminded that at its best, Bass is a complex beer which carries some intentional &#8216;off flavours&#8217; with aplomb. The sulphurous aroma, the hint of <a href="http://www.mashspargeboil.com/home-brew-off-flavours-acetaldehyde/">cider-apple</a> and a final chalkiness, are not repellent but absolutely harmonious. It is reminiscent of, and better than, recent bottles of Worthington White Shield.</p>
<p>Until it tastes this way more often, however, while we won&#8217;t give up on it, it&#8217;ll have to remain on our list of beers of last resort.</p>
<p><em>Simon &#8216;Reluctant Scooper&#8217; Johnson <a href="http://www.reluctantscooper.co.uk/search/label/bass">seems to know where to find Bass in reliably good nick</a>; and those who like to try to find the breaking point of the term <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/when-we-say-craft-beer-we-mean/">craft beer</a> will find Bass a useful bit of ammo.</em></p>

<p>All of which is a roundabout way of saying that we don&#8217;t subscribe to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/robin-turner/craft-beer-beer-here-now_b_1192606.html">the idea that craft beer is the antithesis of real ale in the UK</a>, and that we hope the conversation doesn&#8217;t go any further down the route of keg=good/cask=bad than it already has.</p>

<p>CAMRA have finally done something <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/07/31/yet-more-thoughts-on-camra/">we&#8217;ve wanted to see</a> <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/07/19/can-everyone-just-grow-up/">for a while</a>: begun to consider how the biggest beer campaigning group in Britain should react to so-called <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/when-we-say-craft-beer-we-mean/">craft beer</a> and, in particular, &#8216;craft keg&#8217;.</p>
<p>Members can <a href="http://camra.org.uk/article.php?group_id=3755">read more about the new working group on the CAMRA website</a> (we wish CAMRA wouldn&#8217;t lock all its content away, but hey ho) and we can all read about it direct from one of the group&#8217;s members <a href="http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2012/01/tell-me-what-you-think.html">on Tandleman&#8217;s blog</a>.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a CAMRA member, a lapsed member, or someone who thinks about joining but holds back for whatever reason, you can feed in to this conversation by commenting at Tandleman&#8217;s blog. (But he will be overwhelmed with people wanting their say, so make your comments are constructive and to the point, if you want them to be heard.)</p>
<p>It would be naieve for anyone to expect CAMRA to change policy drastically overnight, not to mention potentially disastrous for the Campaign &#8212; there are, after all, many members, whether we agree with them or not, who believe kegged beer <em>is</em> something to be opposed, and who would cancel their memberships if there is too much change, too quickly. And, assuming the working group does propose changes, those would then have to be approved by members at the annual meeting. (Although wouldn&#8217;t an online poll for members be a great and inclusive alternative?)</p>
<p>Nonetheless it would be great if, through this discussion, CAMRA can find some way to reconcile the organisation&#8217;s aims &#8212; supporting cask ale &#8212; with some kind of support, however restrained, for some of the very good non-cask beer being made in the UK today.</p>

<p>IPA was one of our first loves. As many people just getting into beer seem to find, the bold, obvious hop flavour and aroma provided an entrance point and, in the most visceral way, excited us. In <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Beer-Guide-Worlds-Beers/dp/0751308137">the Great Beer Guide by Michael Jackson</a> (our Bible back then) it was always the IPAs which looked most alluring &#8212; pictured in stemmed glasses, pale at the bottom, glowing amber at the top, the aroma almost lifting off the page. The fact that they played hard to get didn&#8217;t hurt, either: finding a strong hoppy IPA in London in 2007 involved research and usually one or more changes of public transport.</p>
<p>In the last year or two, however, we&#8217;ve drifted away from this style, partly because (at its worst) IPA can be a one-trick pony, and partly because the novelty wore off. (<a href="http://www.beerbirrabier.com/2011/05/colin-valentine-on-beer-bloggers.html">Colin Valentine was right</a> &#8212; once they were everywhere, we got bored and moved on.)</p>
<p>This Christmas, however, we had the opportunity to stop thinking too hard and <em>just enjoy</em> several now easy-to-find IPAs.</p>
<p><strong>St Austell Proper Job (5.5%, bottle)<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Back in November, visiting Bridgwater, we were tipped off that <a href="http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/">Mole Valley Farmers</a> were selling off out-of-date stock of Proper Job and Admiral&#8217;s Ale. We bought everything they had at 60p a bottle, knowing that, being bottle-conditioned, it was unlikely to have &#8216;gone off&#8217;. Sure enough, what we actually got in the Proper Job was a beautifully mellowed, rounded, aged IPA, without the slightly astringent hoppiness and thinnish body of the fresh cask version. Always a great beer, but one that doesn&#8217;t mind a bit of time to mature, it turns out.</p>
<p><strong>Fuller&#8217;s Bengal Lancer (5.3%, bottle)<br />

<p>Is this getting better? The early batches were delicious but, here and there, had a hint of stewed tea about them. The bottles we drank over Christmas not only resembled cask ale more closely than any other bottled beer we&#8217;ve tried (<a href="http://twitter.com/#!/FullersJohn/status/154127664402268160">skillful use of the microscope?</a>) but also seemed brighter, cleaner and somehow less&#8230; English. Worth having in by the case, if you&#8217;re that way inclined.</p>
<p><strong>Sainsbury&#8217;s Taste the Difference IPA (Marston&#8217;s) (5.9%, bottle)</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>This was the real surprise. We picked it up as an emergency backup &#8212; you don&#8217;t want to run out of beer on boxing day, do you? &#8212; but had a moment of eye-popping joy on tasting it. It reminded us, for some reason we can&#8217;t quite pin down, of those heady first days of exploring beer with a Michael Jackson book in our rucksack and <a href="http://hop-talk.com/2007/09/05/no-american-beer-in-london-but-lots-of-american-hops/">absolutely no idea what we were talking about</a>. (<em>Reader: Nothing&#8217;s changed, then?)</em> Could it be the upfront cascade hops, once the darlings of the brewing scene, now a bit old hat? At any rate, Marston&#8217;s are now somewhat redeemed in our eyes. Worst tasting notes ever, though: malt and hops, apparently.</p>
<p><strong>Thornbridge Jaipur (5.9%, cask)</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>We approached this with some trepidation. Tandleman and others whose tastebuds we have no reason to doubt <a href="http://tandlemanbeerblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/briefly-in-glasgow.html">have not been impressed with it lately</a>. Fortunately, on this occasion, we found it as as glorious as ever. Compared to the three bottled IPAs, it seemed to have more toffee and certainly had a weightier body. A deep beer, yes, but also a very drinkable one, which slipped down and caused us (literally) to smack our lips.</p>
<p>Maybe, as we approach our fifth year of blogging about beer, it&#8217;s time to return to dig out Michael Jackson and get back to where we once belonged?</p>

<p><a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Front/194206573953616">The Front in Falmouth</a> (CAMRA Cornwall&#8217;s pub of the year) is a corker. It always has a long list of ales from a range of breweries; bottled beer from America and Belgium; and (because this is the West Country, let&#8217;s not forget) several interesting ciders. We&#8217;ve found the bar staff unfailingly friendly and enthusiastic on our several visits, and the building itself is the very model of cosy, well-worn wonkiness.</p>
<p>Now, it&#8217;s not perfect. On our most recent trip, we looked at the pump clips and despaired, recognising several Cornish breweries whose beers are, at best, <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/08/30/eight-alternatives-to-boring-beer/">bland</a> and, more often, sadly undrinkable. We were momentarily stumped &#8212; there wasn&#8217;t much we actually wanted to drink.</p>
<p>Fortunately, <a href="http://www.tintagelbrewery.co.uk/">Tintagel</a> saved the day. Their Harbour Special (4.8%) was a dark amber delight with lots of citrusy hops up against chocolatey, roasty malt. Gwaf Tan (Winter Fire) (5.5%) was roastier still, with hints of rum and Christmas fruit &#8212; an attempt at a Burton, we think, but almost dark enough to pass for a stout in the low light.</p>
<p>The Front&#8217;s local loyalty is to be applauded but perhaps there&#8217;s something to be said for adjusting the balance to feature more beer from elsewhere in the UK to keep the local brewers on their toes?</p>
<p>At any rate, if you are visiting Cornwall, and like beer, this pub should certainly be on your itinerary. We&#8217;ll certainly be visiting again soon.</p>

<p>Yesterday evening, we finally made into a Penzance pub that we&#8217;d been meaning to visit for a while. We&#8217;d noticed through both traditional methods (looking through the window) and <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/THE_DOCK_INN">on Twitter</a> that the pub in question served <a href="http://www.spingoales.com/">Spingo Middle (5%) from the Blue Anchor in Helston</a>, a cult local beer which, for us, is usually a long, expensive bus ride away.</p>
<p>So, why did it take us so long? Partly because we don&#8217;t yet know how to read Cornish pubs like we used to be able to read them in London. We just can&#8217;t tell from the outside, in the dark, whether we&#8217;ll find <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/05/25/locals-vs-visitors/">a </a><a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/05/25/locals-vs-visitors/">scary atmosphere</a>, or a cheery greeting. So we dither, not wanting to wander into a&#8230; situation.</p>
<p>From the moment we entered <a href="http://www.dockinn.co.uk/The_Dock_Inn/About_Us.html">the Dock Inn</a>,  however, we felt comfortable and at home. <a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2010/02/15/the-alchemy-of-pub-atmosphere/">It hits a sweet spot</a> being clean, cosy and characterful all at the same time. Properly worn in, but not tatty. It has partititons and corners, sofas and tables, a fire and &#8212; most importantly &#8212; people behind the bar who talk to you like human beings whether you&#8217;re a regular or not.</p>
<p>The beer was good, too, although on the cold side, which, as it happens, we don&#8217;t mind at all. Spingo is Spingo, and in the sweet, malty West Country style which you either love or hate. (<a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/06/26/the-allure-of-spingo/">Although, this time, not at all sour</a>.) Skinner&#8217;s Christmas Fairy (3.9%) was&#8230; a Skinner&#8217;s beer. The occasional pint of Betty Stoggs has impressed us but, sadly, we might have to face the fact that we just don&#8217;t get on with them. There was no faulting the condition, though, and this amber-gold beer could not have looked any more appetising in the squeaky clean glass.</p>
<p>This is our new favourite pub in town, without doubt. What a relief to have found it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are some champions of cask ale (quite a few) who truly seem baffled by how people can be at all impressed by kegged or bottled beer. They are no doubt sincere in finding cask ale a superior tasting product in almost every instance.</p>
<p>To that group of people, hearing us and others say that, occasionally, we prefer the kegged or bottled version of a beer, and that we frequently enjoy kegged beers, must seem irritating in the extreme.</p>
<p><strong>In fact, they must feel pretty much how we do when we hear people say they &#8220;<a href="http://boakandbailey.com/2011/09/02/clear-bottles-argh/">just can&#8217;t taste skunking</a>&#8220;.</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s a fundamental lack of mutual understanding which, unfortunately, could probably only be solved by a temporary swapping of tastebuds.</p>
<p><em>Note: there are also a large number of cask ale fanatics who are just awkward sods with a fondness for rigid rules and correcting people. That&#8217;s not who we&#8217;re talking about.</em></p>
